Wash Journ Jun 23 2011 "When should the US engage in War?"

1st caller: "Solve Israel Palestine; that is the source of all the wars in ME."

7:11 caller corporate America needs the resources . . .if the people get radicalized, we should take them out, i don't really care.

7:44 caller not just shooting war; defensive war-- getting ok for our ships, etc., is also cost of war. we should consider that.

7:45 [last] caller. 78 yr old Korean war vet.
____

The real question should be, how do we recognize an enemy? CAMERA helps recognize the enemy: who is Greta afraid of? Who makes Greta and the other C Span moderators afraid, to the extent that they cut off calls and cautions callers, and never, ever pursue a discussion with callers who bring up a topic? Do these constraints apply to any topic other than Israel and Jewish power in the US? Is there a message in this?

Rep Jim Himes, D Conn. re what US mission should be in Afghanistan? Himes: We should withdraw. We should not be state-building for a people who do not want a state to be built, not by us.

re debt ceiling: "people expect that the US is truly a country that stands behind its debts. . . .Debt ceiling needs to be raised to pay for commitments that have already been made.

caller, 8:08, South Carolina: "It is stupid for Obama to tell Boeing that it cannot set up a factory in S Carolina. Boeing will go to China. . . ."

8:21, caller: "Government is running to serve the rich. The poor go to jail, the poor go to war; none of the rich bankers went to jail. . . ." Greta cuts call.

Himes: "Bernie Madoff would be surprised to learn that no rich went to jail." THEN, Himes does a U-turn: "No bankers went to jail. . . ."

8:27, Himes closes: "There's no such thing as democracy in a box. For one thing, we can't afford it; we're spending $800 billion on defense, and we're broke. As well, we fought over 200 years to shape our democracy; other states need to develop their own democracy."

8:30, Rep. John Campbell, R CA. On US wars: withdraw from Afghanistan; we should not be engaged in nation building. "The terrorists are in Iran, . . ." Other ways to go about that. Libya was wrong . . .

re US housing: "US is unique in 30 year mortgage. Other countries have short term loans, which means you buy a lot less house, buy it later in life."

---I say, BUT, Mr. Campbell, other nations copied the US housing bubble.

Housing is 1/6 of the economy. We have to support 30 year mortgages. If we go to shorter term mortgages, price of houses will drop by 25% in a very short time. The banks can't make 30 year mortgage loans and private lenders WON'T give the mortgages unless there is a backstop. [And unless there is a higher interest rate. Lenders are not lending, especially fixed rates for 30 years, because right now rates are at an all time low, but the dollar is devalued, and the debt is so high that interest rates MUST increase, therefore, in a very short time, interest rates could be double what they are today. A lender who lends for 30 years at 4% will be losing money by 2015, when rates could well be in double digits. In 2000, my first mortgage, on Brenda, was 8%.]

caller, 8:47: the world is in the control of a very elite group of financiers. They call the shots, in finance and in the Congress. 70 years ago when Nazi Germany tried to eliminate the communist party, we were allied with Joe Stalin!

Campbell: long term investors, with a long term view point, insurance companies, pension funds, own mortgages. International financiers are not in charge.
